The regional red blend 2019 Vía XVIII has grapes from different villages, but they avoided the zone of the Sil Valley, the valley bottom and toward the slopes. It's mostly Mencía with some Garnacha Tintorera and some of the local reds, Grao Negro, Merenzao and Albarello (Brancellao). It fermented at controlled temperature in stainless steel with approximately 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, and it matured in oak barrels of different sizes for 13 months and a further five months in stainless steel before bottling. This is sharp and mineral, a little austere, seamless, tasty and with very fine tannins. This is beautiful and a bargain for the quality. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.

The Vía XVIII, or Vía Nova, was a Roman road that crossed Valdeorras, and this is the name they chose for their regional red. I tasted two vintages of it, starting with the 2018 Vía XVIII, which has a blend of grapes, mostly Mencía but also Garnacha Tintorera, Grao Negro (teinturier grapes with color in the pulp and fine, sharp acidity), Merenzao and Albarello from different soils, orientations and altitudes. This fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in French barrels of different sizes for 13 months, followed by a further five months in stainless steel. This vintage contains the grapes from one hectare of old vines in As Ermitas. It's a light to medium-bodied red with 13% alcohol. It has notes of ripe strawberries, a little riper than the 2019, quite round and polished already, and it has a gentle palate and is easy to drink and very tasty. 6,000 bottles were filled in May 2020.

The red blend 2017 Vía XVIII is a regional wine from different villages, but avoiding the Sil Valley. It's mostly Mencía with some Garnacha Tintorera (a lot less than in 2016) and some of the local reds, Mouratón, Grao Negro, Merenzao and Albarello (Brancellao). It fermented at controlled temperature in stainless steel with approximately 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts (the different vineyards fermented separately, and most of the Garnacha Tintorera fermented even without skins!). It matured in oak barrels of different sizes for nine months. It's quite floral and aromatic, complex, spicy and quite elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, surprisingly fresh and elegant. It doesn't show any heat, and the rustic side is a lot lighter; there's barely any earthy notes. This is only the second vintage for this wine, and it shows a substantial improvement despite the style of the year. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2019.
