The varietal Merenzao/Trousseau/Bastardo 2019 Bastarda was produced with a majority of grapes from the Val do Bibei, from trellised 20-year-old vines on granite soils at 600 meters in altitude. The full clusters fermented at low temperature with indigenous yeast and a long maceration. It matured in 3,200-liter oak foudre and 2,000-liter concrete vat for eight months. It's light at 12.1% alcohol with a pH of 3.3 and 6.2 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid). The wine is ethereal, perfumed and a bit intriguing, a little more in the style of a Poulsard than a Trousseau, with a wild character, irreverent and full of personality. This is light (lighter than 2018) and very ethereal, with an herbal side, a little in the style of the 2015, a wine that is going to grow in bottle. 6,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020. - Issue 259 End of February 2022, The Wine Advocate -
2018 / 95+ puntos
I first tasted the 2018 Bastarda in a blind tasting just after bottling, and I was blown away. It's a delicate and ethereal red with lots of light, perfume and energy and tons of inner strength, personality and charm. 2018 was not an easy harvest: It had been wet and cold, and they had to work a lot. But they are extremely happy with the results, and they think it's their best vintage to date. The production of this wine is inspired by the Trousseau from Ganevat, using grapes from Ribas do Sil and the banks of the Bibei—two different zones of Ribeira Sacra—with younger and older vines on different soils and perhaps around 10% of other varieties (Brancellao y Caíño) mixed in the old vineyards. They do a very soft and delicate vinification with full clusters, an extended maceration of some 60 days and an élevage of seven months in used 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels. The result is stunning, floral, perfumed, complex, super drinkable from early on. They were able to produce some 6,000 bottles of this gem, and it deserves a space in your cellar. It was bottled in August 2019. - May 2020 Week 2, The Wine Advocate -
