I love the decadent evolution of the 2016 Alto Las Cuestas, the other new red wine I tasted this time. This is produced with Garnacha grapes from a plot in the village of Palacios Rubios in the north of the province of Ávila close to Arévalo. The village had over 600 hectares that were abandoned after the "concentración parcelaria" (land consolidation), and in 2015 they found this 0.9-hectare plot planted ungrafted in 1909 at 900 meters in altitude on granite and limestone soils. It has ripeness, very good acidity and a Mediterranean profile, a little à la Rayas. It's velvety and has ripe flavors, very fine tannins and a lively finish. The ripe bunches were foot trodden, and after they finished fermenting, the wine was put into used 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels where it matured for 24 months. It was bottled unfined, unfiltered and without any added sulfur. Only 980 bottles were filled in May 2021. - Issue 255 End of June 2021, The Wine Advocate -
