Color rojo cereza, limpio y brillante, capa media.
2020 > 95 puntos
The 2020 Pancrudo shows more balanced and approachable than the 2019, with more elegant tannins, fresher fruit and a little less alcohol (this is 14%). It's pure Garnacha from Badarán and is named after the Pancrudo mountain where the Cárdenas River is born, a zone that in the past was devoted to "clarete" wines (rosé mixing red and white grapes). It feels a bit closed and shy with fennel notes of freshness (but it is a ripe year too) and a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins and some austerity. It should develop nicely in bottle. 9,500 bottles were filled in May 2022.
2019 > 94 puntos
One of two vintages I tasted of their top Garnacha bottling, the 2019 Pancrudo is ripe, heady and hedonistic, a little in the Châteauneuf style, with notes of soy sauce and cherries in liqueur. It's 14.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.5 and feels a little hard with the 2019 tannins that are going to need some polishing in bottle. The old vines are on very red soils rich in iron, and this shows the iron in it. 9,500 bottles were filled in May 2021.
2018 > 96 puntos > The 2018 Pancrudo was singing and hitting on all cylinders on a sunny Saturday morning in Madrid when I tasted it. This is like an upgraded version of the already phenomenal 2016, floral, delicate and complex, elegant and full of light and energy. The wine has gobsmacking balance and a rare combination of power and elegance, ripeness and freshness that is hard to achieve. The oak is perfectly integrated and folded into the fruit; there is subdued minerality; and the wine is nicely textured, seamless and velvety, with lots of inner strength. A wine like this should be very long lived. Among the best Garnacha in Rioja and the country... Two-thirds of the volume matured in oak barrels for 12 months and the rest was kept for the same time in concrete eggs. 4,904 bottles and 290 magnums were filled in February 2020.
