2018 > 95 puntos
The grapes for the 2018 Reserva come from the parts of the vineyard where there is more limestone in the soil. Mostly Tinta del País (Tempranillo) with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, it fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured for 20 months in French barriques, 30% new. Despite 2018 being a cooler and rainier year than 2020, I found this 2018 to be quite riper than the 2018 Hacienda Monasterio that I tasted next to it. This is headier and darker (in aromatic profile, not only in color), full-bodied, tannic and powerful and seems that it comes from a different era (the change was initiated in 2019 but is more noticeable from 2020). It has some of the leafy and balsamic notes from the Cabernet that emerges after some time in the glass. There are 38,000 bottles of this.
2017 > 95 puntos
Somehow I didn't taste the 2017 Hacienda Monasterio, but I did taste the 2017 Reserva, which is quite impressive for such a challenging year in Ribera del Duero. They suffered less from the frost on the property, which is quite warm and usually frost-free. The wine has a seductive nose that combines raspberries and cranberries with herbs and flowers. It's ripe at 15% alcohol, but it does not show heat or alcohol. This is 80% to 82% Tinto Fino and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that matured in barrel for some 20 months. It's medium to full-bodied, juicy, rich and velvety, with fine, chalky tannins. The wine really transcends the challenges of the vintage and delivers more than I expected. 35,000 bottles produced.
2016 > 96 puntos
The difference between the 2016 Reserva and the regular Hacienda Monasterio (the wine labelled as Crianza in the past), is that they select the grapes from the parts of the vineyard where there is more limestone in the soil. It's mostly Tinta del País (a.k.a. Tempranillo) with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, then matured for 20 months in French barriques, 40% new. The oak is perfectly integrated, and the wine has an impressive nose with more red than black fruit, denoting freshness. It's quite polished and has very elegant tannins. This is a superb vintage for this bottling—the Cabernet Sauvignon is very integrated with the Tempranillo and complements it. It's powerful but has terrific balance and great finesse. This is my favorite vintage of the Reserva. It's a modern version of the 1996, a wine that I'm very fond of. It's the idea that I have of a wine from Ribera del Duero. Bravo! 30,000 bottles were filled in August 2018.
