Crítica

There were high expectations for the new top of the range 2014 Quiñón de Valmira, pure Garnacha from a zone that names the wine in the Monte Yerga in the village of Alfaro in Rioja Baja, where the winery is located. These vines, planted 30 years ago on a soft slope, have recently been regrafted to Garnacha from the original Tempranillo; in 2014, they had tiny yields. The grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts with punching down of the cap. The maceration lasted some 49 days and malolactic was in barrel. First of all, the wine surpassed the expectations, especially since I had previewed a trial of 2009, which had nothing to do with what I saw in the glass today. What I saw here was an elegant, subtle and aromatic red, quite pale-colored, with a nose dominated by aromas of flowers, cherry pit and wild strawberries, with a touch of spices and (even if many might get annoyed) a Burgundian feeling to it. The sensation on the palate combines acid and chalk, which provides for great length and a tasty, mineral-driven finish. The soils are very shallow, as the content in active limestone is high and the soils are very white. There are some 1,000 bottles produced. The wine had been in barrel since December 2014 and was finally bottled in April 2016. This goes straight to the Rioja champion's league. It's accessible now and it feels like it can age with grace. It's sold separately from the Palacios Remondo range. Unfortunately, it wears a hefty price tag. I could also preview the 2015, which was so juicy and ethereal that it made me think of a Trousseau from Jura!
