The 2012 Garnacha Tintorera does not carry the Monterrei appellation, as the grapes is not contemplated as a varietal wine. The grapes are sourced from very old, head-pruned vineyards on decomposed granite with alluvial components. The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented in an open oak vat were it went through malolactic in contact with the skins. The wine was raised for 13 months in oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered and un-fined, after natural decanting. It has the deep color of the variety and a floral/rustic note mixing aromas of violets and tree bark. It has a medium-bodied palate with abundant, fine-grained tannins and high acidity that shows finesse and balance. This is a civilized Garnacha Tintorera; a well-mannered rustic wine that is full of character. Only 500 bottles were produced in 2012.
